What is a wedding wishing well?

A wedding wishing well is a special box where the bride and groom ask the wedding guests to place cards with their best wishes and monetary gifts. The box is usually decorated with ribbon, lace, or other decorations, and placed near the entrance of the wedding reception.

The concept of a wedding wishing well comes from an old English tradition. In olden times, everyone was expected to bring something special for the couple on their wedding day. These gifts usually consisted of coins or special letters of blessing, which were placed into a decorated 'wishing' box provided by the bride and groom. This gave guests an outlet to give the couple something meaningful on their special day, and ensured that those attending had given them something noteworthy for the new life that lay ahead of them.

Today, many couples prefer to abstain from asking for money or gifts from their wedding guests directly in exchange for their presence. A wedding wishing well allows couples to continue in this tradition without appearing too direct about expecting a gift from their guests. They also offer an opportunity for out-of-towners who can't make it to offer their best wishes with a short note included in the envelope accompanying whatever money is given as well as bless them with other more personal tokens if they are close enough.
